Price-marking is widely used in the retail and manufacturing environments. Although most large retailers use the pre-printed product barcode for identification of the product and price at the checkout, smaller retailers apply a price label to each item.

These systems offer the benefit of being able to code individual items whilst on the manufacturing line, or to price each item as it is packed onto store shelves. Some labels allow for both traceability and pricing, while others also allow for sell-by and best-before dates.
